Studying Japanese

Japanese is the official language of Japan, which has a population of over 125m. There are also around 2.5m people of Japanese origin, many of whom speak Japanese as their first language, living in Brazil and the rest of the Americas, particularly the United States. You'll also find a sizeable expatriate presence in major cities such as London, New York and Paris.

    JAPN901 - Japanese Beginners 1

    Choose this course if

    • You have no knowledge of the language at all.

    Equivalent language level (CEFR)

    • Beginners - A1

    Start Date

    JAPN902 - Japanese Beginners 2

    To take this module, you need to have one of the following:

    • Completed Japanese Stage 1
    • Have completed a 40 hour course equivalent to A1 CEFR
    • Completed one year of Japanese at School
    • The ability to hold a very basic conversation in Japanese about yourself (work,studies, hobbies), asking basic questions and understanding the answers.

    Equivalent Language Level (CEFR)

    • Beginners - A1.2

    JAPN903 – Japanese Elementary 3

    Choose this course if

    You have studied the language formally for one course only - approximately 60 hours, or up to GCSE. 

    Equivalent Language Level (CEFR)

    • Intermediate (GCSE equivalent) - A2.1

    JAPN904 – Japanese Elementary 4

    Choose this module if you have one of the following

    • Completed Japanese Stage 3
    • Have approximately 50 hours course equivalent to A1 CEFR
    • Completed one year of Japanese at school
    • The ability to have a conversation in Japanese about yourself (work, studies, hobbies) asking basic questions and understanding the answers

    Equivalent Language Level (CEFR)

    Elementary GCSE equivalent) - A2.2

    Start Date:

    • Friday 31 January 

    Start Time:

    • 1 - 3pm

    JAPN905 - Japanese Intermediate 5

    Choose this module if:

    You have studied the language formally up to AS or A-Level – at least 120 hours.

    Equivalent language level:

    • Advanced (AS level equivalent) – B1.1
    • 3-4 hours per week
