Welcome to the School of Histories, Languages and Cultures: The Essentials

Transitioning to university can be both challenging and exciting. This session will cover essential resources and expectations for students, beginning with a welcome talk from the Dean of School and an introduction to key staff. You'll learn about student support, the student voice, careers, and employability opportunities, as well as managing time effectively, taking ownership of your work, and understanding available support. This session is designed to equip you with the knowledge and tools for a smooth and successful transition to university life.

A message from the HLC Associate Dean for Education, Professor Diana Cullell-Teixidor:

We are really looking forward to meeting you! During the session you will meet key members in the School and you will be signposted to all the support we can offer you throughout your studies. We will discuss topics such as registration and modules, coursework and assignment, as well as Student Representation and Societies. We will also chat about settling into University, how to set yourself up for success and the pitfalls of Generative Artificial Intelligence!

At the session, you will also meet a current student who has recently been in your position! A message from HLC 2nd year student Oliwia Felinska:

As I’m entering my second year of study, I know exactly how you’re feeling as a new student at the University. During the session, I will be giving you my experience and tips and will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. By giving guidance in the session, I hope to provide insights how fun and exciting this journey will be!

Languages at Liverpool

Date: Wednesday 18 September 2024
Time: 3pm – 4pm
Location: Yoko Ono Lennon Centre, Lecture Theatre 1

Open Languages is the University of Liverpool’s Institution-Wide Language Programme and it offers a suite of language modules with a flexible learning system.

Open Languages is available to UG students who can choose to study a language as an elective in their degree programme* and to those who wish to take a language in addition to it, as an extracurricular activity. Open Languages is also available to staff and members of the public aged 16 and over.

Languages available: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

You can start in any year of study, in Semester 1 or 2, and there is a range of levels available depending on the language (A1 to B2).

Regardless of the study mode, all Open Languages modules are delivered via weekly 2-hour seminars on campus, usually scheduled 6-8pm, and supported with asynchronous materials on Canvas. A certificate of engagement is awarded to students with at least 70% attendance and on successful completion of the assessment, the course will be included in your HEAR. Assessment is done via class tests: there is a written test and a speaking test at the end of each module.

If taken as an optional/elective module, there is no extra fee to pay, and assessment is mandatory - you need to pass your tests to get your credits!

If taken as extracurricular, there is a fee (£180 full fee or £90 for recipients of the Liverpool Bursary per module) and assessment is optional - depending on if you would like to have your language course recorded in your HEAR.

Contact email: openlang@liverpool.ac.uk

*Open Languages modules as electives: International Business (and IB with YI), History in Y1, Maths, Geography, Chemistry
