Timeline of key events
The information provided below is for guidance only and the timelines provided are subject to change. Note that briefing sessions and events will usually take place on a Wednesday afternoon.
In May of your First Year, you will recieve an introductory Briefing Session.
The aim of this session is to provide students with some basic information about the key aspects of the Year Abroad, and what to expect in Year 2.
Week 2 - Initial Briefing Session
This session will provide information on the key aspects of the Year Abroad. This will be a more in- depth version of the session delivered in year 1 and will provide exact dates and timelines for the Year Abroad (attendance at this session is compulsory).
Week 4 – Pathway Briefing Sessions
There will be a specific session for each of the Year Abroad Pathways: Study Placements, Work Placements and British Council Language Teaching Assistantships (BCLA).
Students should attend sessions for all of the pathways they are interested in. All students are advised to attend the Study Placements briefing.
Weeks 5 & 6 – Guide to Partner Universities Sessions (Study Pathway)
These sessions will give students more information about our partners in each country.
Week 7 or 8 – Year Abroad Fair
An opportunity to meet final year student ambassadors and staff from each pathway and find out more about your options, ask questions and get further advice.
End of November – Year Abroad Intentions Form Opens
Students will be asked to complete a form to list their preferred pathway(s) for the Year Abroad. The form will close on the last day of term before the Christmas break.
Early December – Deadline to submit expression of interest for the BCLA programme
Students who are interested in the BCLA programme will be asked to submit an expression of interest by early December. They will then be invited to an informal meeting with their Academic Advisor, or a member of Languages, Cultures and Film if they are taking the language as a minor before the Christmas break.
Early February
Deadline to apply for the BCLA programme.
February / March (after semester 1 results)
Students who have chosen the Study Pathway will be allocated to partner universities.
February / March – Next Steps Briefing Session
This session will go over all of the next steps and what to expect for each pathway (attendance at this session is compulsory).
Mid-April
Deadline to secure a Work Placement for Semester 1 / Full-Year.
Mid-May – Pre-Departure Briefing Session
This session will cover lots of important information students need to know ahead of going on their Year Abroad (attendance at this session is compulsory).
Deadline to secure a Work Placement for Semester 2.
