Portuguese
The 7th most widely spoken language in the world, Portuguese has vital global importance thanks to Brazil's growing economy. We are one of the few universities that offer Portuguese from beginners' to advanced level.
Study Portuguese as part of Hispanic Studies
You will study Portuguese as part of Hispanic Studies, rather than as a stand-alone course. Hispanic studies is a diverse course covering the languages, literatures, cultures and histories of Spain, Portugal and Latin America.
Modules
At the same time as you learn the Portuguese language, you will also learn about the history, society and culture of the Portuguese-speaking world. Students on our BA in Hispanic Studies also have an option to take beginners' modules in Portuguese language in their final year of study.
Year abroad
As a language student you will spend at least seven months in Year 3 studying or working in a Portuguese-speaking country (this may include Brazil) on your year abroad.
Resources
We have strong links with the Instituto Camões allowing us to enrich and maximise student experience through cultural events and activities. We have a fully-equipped language laboratory and a language lounge that can also be used for private study.
