On 27 January 2025, the Department of Languages, Cultures and Film with Dr Ulrike Bavendiek at the forefront hosted a dynamic and interactive event in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut London to highlight career opportunities for those with German language skills.
Throughout the day, participants engaged in a range of activities centred on careers and the job market. Information stalls, including representatives from the German-UK Network, s-imagine, the British Council, Alphasights, and the Goethe-Institut, provided valuable insights. The Goethe-Institut’s stall featured a “wheel of fortune” and delightful giveaways, such as wooden yoyos, notebooks, and badges with German idioms.
Comics, art, memory and translation
Across the university campus, 298 pupils from 14 schools from across the country, accompanied by their teachers, took part in interactive taster sessions. Dr Lyn Marven led sessions on translation, comics, and art, while Professor Anna Saunders explored art, architecture, and memory in Berlin.
Career opportunities
Pupils also received advice on developing career-relevant skills led by the University’s Career Studio, the benefits of a year abroad with Chrissie Evans and Hanna Magedera supported by final year student Ruben, and strategies for applying for jobs including sample CVs in German, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese to take away. A workshop titled “Scausländer: Become a journalist” was delivered by the Scausländer Team Elle, Jakub and Teresa.
Other activities included a music session with DAAD Lektorin Lena Nielinger and a “carousel of activities” led by Anke Bohm from the Language Lounge and designed by Hanna Magedera. These included a languages quiz with 19 languages and a matching memory card game, a Mozart-themed quiz - given that his birthday is on 27th January 1756 - where chocolate was to be won, and more.
Our committed ambassadors, briefed by our Outreach Lead Claudia François, expertly guided all groups around and supported this event brilliantly.
Holocaust Memorial Day
The event concluded with a commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day. Emerita Professor Eve Rosenhaft delivered a talk titled “The Genocide of Europe’s Roma 1935–1945” at Princes Road Synagogue. This was followed by “Between the Notes of Life: Testimony to the Romani Genocide”, a moving reading accompanied by music performed by Swing Trio Manouche, featuring Manolito Steinbach and Donny Schwarz on guitar and Sorin Ferat on violin.
This collaborative event was a celebration of the rich opportunities afforded by German language skills while also fostering cultural understanding and historical reflection.
This news story was written by Hanna Magedera, Senior Lecturer in German.
The event was hosted with the support of the Centre for Language Excellence (CTELL).
