Last month, we welcomed six alumni and industry professionals across the Liverpool City Region to take part in our Languages, Cultures and Film Alumni and Industry panel.
The panel was designed to provide Languages, Cultures and Film Final-Year students with insights into the array of opportunities available to them when they graduate, as well as some advice into how to get their foot in the door.
Each guest offered valuable insights into their career journeys, illustrating the diverse opportunities available to students based on their degrees. Key takeaways included the importance of developing a personalised career roadmap and embracing the mindset of "why not you?"—a reminder that everyone must start somewhere.
Reflecting on the event, Matt Jones said:
Throughout the engaging Q&A, students were afforded the opportunity to learn about the successes and challenges of linear and non-linear (or squiggly!) career paths, gain real-world insights into a diverse range of roles and sectors, such as film and TV, marketing, education and charity work, and discover how the skills, academic knowledge and experience developed during their time at University of Liverpool can prepare them for their future career.
I hope that careers-focused events, such as this one, will empower our students to try new things with curiosity and interest, to explore a wide array of exciting opportunities and experiences, and proactively develop their professional networks, both now and in the future.
Matt Jones, Lead Career Consultant for the Faulty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
One of the graduates on the panel shared her insights regarding her experience:
I was honoured to take place in the LCF Alumni Panel in September seven years after graduating. Now working in higher education, I can see the impact that your degree has as well as shaping the person you become in the future. I have been privileged to travel the world with my job for the past five years and this would not have been possible without the exposure I experienced whilst studying at UoL. Thank you to everyone who made this opportunity possible.
Sophie Coan (BA Modern Languages 2017)
We thank all the guests that attended the panel and are excited to host similar events in the future, exploring our graduates’ diverse career paths.
