What is Multi-Factor authentication (MFA)?
Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) provides an additional layer of security beyond a username and password.
It is commonly used for online services such as banking, Microsoft, and Google accounts, and works by having more than one method of confirming your identity. For example, by using a mobile app or text message sent to a trusted number that you have enrolled with the service.
Duo enrolment is mandatory for all University of Liverpool staff and students to access many of our systems and services, including CoreHR, Apps Anywhere, the Virtual Private Network (VPN) service, Microsoft Office 365, Canvas and Library journals.
How do I enrol for Duo?
You can enrol with a smart device, such as a smartphone and use the Duo Mobile app, or you can opt to use SMS text messages if you prefer. Enrolment is quick and simple, and can be done here.
If you change your mobile number or smart device, you will need access to your old number or device. This is to authenticate yourself and re-register with the new one. If you no longer have access to the old number or device, you must visit the IT Service Desk for in-person support on campus.
International students and staff, please note that using a mobile number or smart device that works in the UK is essential. You can register with an international number or device before arriving in the UK, but if it doesn’t work once you’re here, you will need to re-register with a UK-compatible number or device following the above guidance.
How do trusted external partners authenticate?
Guest accounts are a way to provide access to trusted external partners to the University’s Microsoft Office 365 environment, for example, to facilitate project collaboration, share research information, etc and allow you to provide access to files which are protected with a Confidential sensitivity label.
MFA for guest accounts gives you and the University assurance that only authorised guests can access the data you share.
If you manage or create any guest accounts for file sharing in the future, please ensure you share the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for Guest Accounts User Guide with all external partners for whom you have set up a guest account.
They will need to follow these instructions to choose and enable a relevant MFA method, as failure to do so means they not be able to access University files or collaborate with you in a secure manner.
