Remember, remember, IT this November
IT Services is always working hard to enhance your digital experience while working and studying at the University. Before we enter the Festive season, we wanted to remind you of the simple things you can do to make the best of the digital technology available at our University.
Here are some quick reminders of things you can do and things we are working on to make your relationship with our tech better than ever.
What’s available from IT Services?
Windows 11 for your staff computer
Windows 11 enhances security, and all staff now need to upgrade their staff computer as soon as possible. In addition to improvements to the security of yours and the University’s data, Windows 11 offers some great new features and will make it possible for the University to roll out other projects that will improve the functionality of our IT systems.
Information Security Policy
If you handle information on behalf of our University as part of your work or role (eg as a researcher, honorary member, student or third party), you must adhere to our Information Security Policy. Information security is the framework of controls around policy, physical security, technical security, training and organisational culture that help to protect the information that is valuable to the University.
Cyber security guidance
By staying proactive and alert, we can work together to build a safer digital world for everyone. Our cyber security guidance is there to help you navigate the digital world safely and securely.
Keeping our network secure
We are continuing to implement Network Access Control (NAC) throughout the University to strengthen our network security infrastructure. You will receive a direct notification when IT Services is rolling out NAC in your area. Our end user device management tool, Tanium helps ensure devices are adequately secured when connecting to the University network and accessing University systems. It also enables rapid response to security threats with real-time visibility and control.
Banner works: Monday, 2 December, 7am to 8am
IT Services is undertaking planned works on Banner between 7am and 8am on Monday, 2 December and during this time, it will be unavailable.
What do I need to do?
You can check if your staff machine is currently running on Windows 10, by going to Start > Settings > System > About. Your version of Windows will be shown below the Windows specifications heading:
If it shows that you are on Windows 10, or earlier, you now need to upgrade to Windows 11 by following these simple instructions. It’s a simple process which will take up to four hours to complete, so you may find it beneficial to begin the installation at the end of the working day.
Check out the wide range of policies available from IT Services, including our Information Security Policy. Why not run through them in your next team meeting to ensure everyone you work with is familiar with what they need to do to keep our University safe and secure.
Complete your cyber security training today by going to the MyCompliance tile on the left-hand side of Microsoft Teams (staff) or KnowHow: Study for Success > Digital Skills > Cyber Security in Canvas (students). If you receive a phishing email, please send it as an attachment to phishingalert@liverpool.ac.uk. You do not need to contact the IT Service Desk as well, as this dedicated email address allows our Security team to efficiently deal with phishing directly.
Managed Windows Service (MWS) users will be unaffected by the implementation of NAC as they will pass compliance tests and, as such, there will be no action for you to take. If you are using a non-managed device, please ensure that you have antimalware installed and it is up to date. Following the implementation of NAC, you will receive a pop-up notification asking you to authenticate with your MWS username and password. If you use a non-MWS University owned/purchased device to connect to the University network, you will also need to install Tanium on it. Tanium should not be installed on any personally owned devices. The University has an agreement in place which allows all staff and students to install Sophos Home antivirus to install on your personal devices to help keep them safe and secure.
