It’s a new academic year – Here's everything you need to know from IT Services
Welcome to a new academic year, for our new students, returning students and staff. IT Services is the team dedicated to enhancing your digital experience while working and studying at the University. From enhancing our lecture capture service to improving our security, this new academic year is full of digital improvements to make your experience working or studying at the University better than ever.
Here's everything that’s happening this new academic year to help you make the most of the technology the University has to offer.
What’s new from IT Services?
- Changes to how you use Panopto in lecture theatres and seminar rooms
Following feedback on our lecture capture service Panopto, the default settings used in Panopto for Windows in our lecture theatres and seminar rooms have been updated. This means that our lecture theatre and seminar rooms will capture the screen, audio and webcam as standard.
- Tanium device management tool deployment
IT Services is currently rolling out an end user device management tool which will help ensure devices are adequately secured when connecting to the University network and accessing University systems. It will also enable rapid response to security threats with real-time visibility and control. The management tool is called Tanium and it has been deployed to over 12,000 Managed Windows Service (MWS) devices. - New and improved Information Management Policy
What do we need to deliver the University strategy? Perhaps the usual answers spring to mind - finance, facilities and of course, people. There is another element that all too often gets forgotten about, our information. It is an essential part of running our University and achieving the goals set out in the Liverpool 2031 framework.
What do I need to do?
- Feedback told us that the new default settings for Panopto would meet your needs the majority of the time, but if you do wish to make changes eg remove the webcam feed, you can do this easily.
- If you use a non-MWS University owned/purchased device to connect to the University network, you will need to install Tanium on it. Tanium should not be installed on any personally owned devices. The University has an agreement in place which allows all staff and students to install Sophos Home antivirus to install on your personal devices to help keep them safe and secure. To install Tanium please follow the instructions in Tanium device management - What you need to do for all non-MWS University owned/purchased devices within your faculty, school or department.
- Read the updated Information Management Policy to learn more about how you and your colleagues can help to protect people’s rights, reduce risks and increase efficiency, productivity and good decision-making.
