As you are aware, IT Services is constantly reviewing and updating our systems to keep our network and infrastructure safe and secure, but this is a responsibility we all share. There are simple things we can all do every day to create positive change for our digital security and mitigate the risks associated with potential malicious attacks.

You can help IT Services keep the University safe by ensuring the software you are using is up-to-date. Software updates feature security patches, as well as new and improved features to enhance your experience, secure your account data, improve performance, and ensure your programmes remain compatible with the latest technology. Updates ensure your devices continue to perform at their best, while on campus and at home.

To ensure that you are not using out of date software which could put the University at risk, IT Services is currently monitoring the use of the following programmes and will be removing out of date versions of these from any devices they are installed on:

  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Zoom Client
  • Python
  • R
  • Adobe Acrobat (Adobe Reader)
  • Git
  • Citrix Workspace
  • Microsoft Visual Studio
  • 7-zip
  • Java

If any of these programmes are removed from your device and you need to use them, you can easily install an up-to-date version using Install University Applications (IUA). Using IUA ensures you are using an up-to-date secure version of your software and keeps everyone at the University safe.

Please get in touch with IT Services if you have any concerns or queries about how to keep your data and the University’s data safe.
