The most important things you can do for online security

The two most crucial steps you can take to ensure you and your work are safe from malicious attackers online are as follows:

1. Update your PC

Whatever device you are using, whether it is a University supplied machine or your personal device, make sure it is updated. Staff HP MWS machines are currently being updated through IT Services, but if you would like to undertake the update yourself at a time that is convenient for you, you can do so by following these instructions

If you use your own laptop or computer to access University systems, make sure its operating system is updated to the latest version.

2. Install antivirus

Cisco Secure Endpoint antivirus software is installed on all machines running the Managed Windows Service (MWS).

For other University-owned devices, such as Macs and Linux machines, members of staff must ensure that the operating system is up-to-date and must download and install Cisco Secure Endpoint.

The University has an agreement in place with Sophos, to provide all staff and student with Sophos Home antivirus to install on your personal home computers.

If you ever have any security concerns, or you have received an email you're not sure of, contact the IT Service Desk for information before clicking on any links.
