We asked our graduates to share a bit about themselves and offer advice to aspiring app developers based on their experience so far:

Interview with Jacob Brain

Degree:

Computer Science

Module:

In my Group Software 208 module, we focused on working as a team to develop software and games.

Specialty/Technical interests:

My technical interests lie in iOS development and Apple devices, particularly in mobile development. Though I only began programming for iOS last year during my dissertation, I've always been immersed in coding. My primary motivation for iOS development stemmed from my desire to create apps that I personally use and enjoy.

Favourite project so far:

Reskinning the old Catch It app so that it can be redeveloped using up-to-date software. I used Figma for the design and worked closely with the Design team receiving some mentoring, which improved my design skills and design awareness for things such as accessibility requirements.

Favourite app:

My favourite app is Strava, a running app that allows users to track their progress and provides motivation to run. I appreciate its topical relevance and the motivational aspect it brings. Additionally, I admire BeReal, an innovative social media platform that synchronises photo submissions from all users simultaneously. Despite the complexity of its operation and the vast amount of data involved, I find it inspiring to witness how a unique idea can evolve into a successful venture.

New app you're excited about:

Currently, I'm exploring various new apps and technologies in the iOS development realm, but I don't have a specific one I'm excited about yet.

Most used emoji:

πŸ˜‚πŸŽ¨πŸ˜³ (Laughing face, painted, embarrassed emoji)

Career aspirations:

Initially drawn to website and software development due to its familiarity and comfort, I transitioned into app development as I gained more experience. I find building apps more enjoyable and fulfilling, particularly seeing designs come to life and witnessing users enjoy the applications I've built.

Advice for aspiring app developers:

Find joy in seeing your designs come to life and in observing users enjoying the applications you've created. Emphasise the satisfaction that comes from developing something that positively impacts others' lives.
