In Focus: Partnership with Shanghai Jiaotong University

Last month the University of Liverpool announced three new agreements with three Shanghai institutions to mark the 25th anniversary of the Liverpool – Shanghai ‘sister cities’ partnership. As part of an ongoing series, we will take a look at each partnership, first looking at Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU).
A world ‘top 100’ institution, SJTU was founded in 1896 and is a key public university directly under the Ministry of Education (MoE) and Shanghai Municipal Government. SJTU is currently comprised of five campuses. The University holds 71 undergraduate programs covering nine major disciplines: economics, law, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and arts.
The University of Liverpool has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as well as a seed fund to catalyse research collaborations in areas of complementary strength in the following areas:
Innovation in Marine Sciences, Maritime and Ports
This will focus in area of climate change, blue economy, shipping and port smart operations, logistics and supply chain management, net zero and decarbonisation (including tidal energy and offshore structures)
Health and Biomedicine
Focusing on pharmacy, pharmacology and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM); women’s health & paediatrics; mental health; drug safety innovation; vaccine research; public health.
Creative Industries and Social Sciences
Focusing on media and design; film and new media; architecture; world literature and translation; IP law; international law.
Discussions are ongoing for further areas of common interest/ potential areas for collaboration. Other potential opportunities include collaborative PhDs and doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships.
