IISc is a premier research institute in India and an institute of eminence. IISc was stablished in 1909 in Bengaluru on a campus of 400 acres of tropical landscape. Areas of strength include space science, material science and engineering, environmental and atmospheric sciences, endocrinology and genetic engineering. The university has also identified three areas for upcoming research: genomics, nano-sciences and mathematics.

The University of Liverpool and the Indian Institute of Science have established a joint fund to deepen and extend collaborative research links between the universities.

The fund covers travel and subsistence costs for staff to undertake short-term visits in both directions with the objective enabling collaborators to develop outputs and outcomes that leverage external funding.
