Liverpool docks and city skyline at dusk.

Welcome to applicants from USA

As a departure point for millions of emigrants to the USA, the relationship between Liverpool and America spans hundreds of years. Rich in history, Liverpool embraces newcomers and offers the wonderful combination of university prestige and cultural capitol. Notable alumni include Wendy Beetlestone, who was nominated to be a US Federal Judge in 2014.

Entry requirements

You can find details of qualifications from your country below.

Some of these qualifications may be accepted as equivalent to our typical academic requirements. For others, we may require you to complete a Foundation Certificate or Pre-Master's course first.

You'll also need to check our course pages to view the specific entry requirements, including any additional criteria, for your intended course.

If you're wondering what's the difference between an undergraduate degree and a master's, we can help. We've pulled together a guide to the variety of awards and research opportunities we offer, so you can find the type of degree that's right for you.

Undergraduate degrees

If you’re studying in an American high school, we'd typically look for the following qualification to meet our entry requirements:

High school graduation diploma with a GPA of 3.0 plus one of the following:

  • 3 College Board AP exams (grades 4, 4, 4 to 5, 5, 5)
  • 2 College Board AP exams (grades 4 and/or 5) and another externally-assessed qualification, eg an IB higher level certificate)
  • 2 College Board AP exams (grades 4 and/or 5) and an Honors/College level class (grade B+ or higher).

Where there is a subject requirement at A level, we require a College Board AP in this subject.

Students offering a good GPA after completing the first year of an undergraduate course at an American university can also be considered for first year entry for selected courses at the University of Liverpool.

Don't meet our entry requirements for undergraduate?

If you have good high school grades but don't meet our entry requirements, don't worry. You could apply for a place on a Foundation Certificate. These courses are delivered on campus at the University of Liverpool International College.

Successful completion of a Foundation Certificate, at the required level and with good attendance, will guarantee your place on your chosen University of Liverpool undergraduate degree.

Master's courses

Students offering a bachelor's degree from an American university are welcome to apply for a master's programme. For most programmes we look for a GPA of at least 2.8.

Don’t meet our master’s entry requirements?

If you hold a bachelors' degree or equivalent but don't meet our entry requirements, don't worry. You could apply for a place on a Pre-Master's course.

These courses are delivered on campus at the University of Liverpool International College. Successful completion of a Pre-Master's, at the required level and with good attendance, will guarantee your place on your chosen University of Liverpool master's degree.

Postgraduate research

Each application is assessed on its own merits, however students will usually be expected to hold a master's degree. Previous exposure to research or thesis writing is highly desirable.

English language requirements

USA is classed as majority native English speaking by the UK government. We usually assume that applicants from USA meet our English language requirements.

If you're an applicant from USA, you shouldn't need to provide evidence of your English language ability.

Tuition fees and living costs

Our tuition fees vary depending on your course and your confirmed fee status as either an international or UK (‘home') student. You'll find our tuition fees listed on each course page.

You'll also need to budget for covering your living costs while studying with us. This includes your accommodation and travel expenses, such as flights to the UK.

Scholarships and bursaries

One way we can help you pay for your studies is with our Advancement Scholarships.

You could receive a tuition fee discount worth up to £5,000 for eligible master's students, up to £5,000 for eligible undergraduate students, or up to £2,500 for University of Liverpool graduates.

We also offer a variety of other scholarships and bursaries for eligible international students to help make studying at university more affordable.
