English Communication Skills pathway
The International Summer School works with the University of Liverpool's English Language Centre to deliver a language skills course, designed to enhance communication skills for work and study.
The main aim of the English Communication Skills (ECS) pathway is to help students develop all aspects of their English proficiency, with a particular emphasis on English for your studies and future career.
Students studing on this pathway will enjoy full integration and access to the International Summer School's social programme, the University's campus, and future alumni benefits.
Course contents
The ECS pathway runs for three weeks (weeks 4-6 of the International Summer School's programme), and consists of three modules:
- Language as Culture (PDF, 5.8MB)
- Enhancing Employability (PDF, 5MB)
- Presenting Confidently (PDF, 6.1MB).
Modules will provide the opportunity to develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing through communicative and collaborative work. They are designed not only to improve your English language skills, but to apply them in practical settings that can be used in future study and employment.
Skills are also developed organically through getting out into the city of Liverpool, speaking with locals, learning about local culture, and using language in an active way.
Entry requirements
The ECS pathway is available to applicants with a minimum English language level of IELTS 5.0 or equivalent, and below the IELTS 6.0 or equivalent that is required for the International Summer School's academic modules. (If you do not have a recent language test, we can send you a short online test after application.)
Please note that the ECS pathway cannot be combined with academic modules, but all other elements of the International Summer School programme are the same.
Applications can be made in the same way online, selecting the ECS pathway modules when prompted.
