Freya travelled to Germany last month to speak at Humboldt University, Berlin, and Göttingen University.
She presented work in progress on the gendered significations of high-pitched adult male voices in mid-to-late twentieth-century music, comparing the art music world (in the form of the countertenor revival, spearheaded by Alfred Deller) with popular music trends (as found in doo wop, surf music, and disco). Freya was invited to contribute to a programme on the subject on Deutschlandradio Kultur and the programme is available here, if you click “Beitrag hören”.
