SOCI 523 An Introduction to Data Visualization Using R
A 10-week course running every Wednesday from 29th January 2025, 9-11am
Coordinator: Dr Peter Campbell
This short course will consider how data can be visualized to reveal, or conceal, patterns in the social world. Students will be introduced to principles which are deemed to characterise successful visualization, and will learn how to implement such principles using the programming language R. This will cover the idea of the ‘grammar of graphics’, and the key types of visualization techniques utilising colour and shape to convey meaning. We will also consider how to make comparisons visually, how to ensure readers can understand our ‘message’, and how to evaluate, and potentially improve upon, visualisations in the public domain.
Location: University of Liverpool, in person, Eleanor Rathbone Building, Room 201, Eleanor Rathbone PC Teaching Centre, Bedford Street South, Liverpool, L69 7ZA
