Help Eighteenth-Century Worlds Celebrate Their Tenth Anniversary

Eighteenth-Century Worlds is celebrating its tenth anniversary and invites you to come along for afternoon tea on 16 May and to get involved in their fascinating work.
Eighteenth-Century Worlds (ECW) is an interdisciplinary research centre (homed in the School of Histories, Languages and Cultures) which aims to promote research in the political, social, economic, intellectual and cultural life of the ‘long’ eighteenth century (1650-1850).
It was founded ten years ago to become a dynamic co-ordinating hub for eighteenth-century studies across the University and the wider city region. In this time, it has successfully nurtured collaborative research, postgraduate supervision and teaching across departments including Modern Languages, English, History, Irish Studies, Classics and Archaeology, Music, Archive Studies, Management, Philosophy and Chinese Studies, as well as developing close collaborative relationships with institutions including the Decorative Arts Department at National Museums Liverpool, the Liverpool Athenaeum, the National Trust, Knowsley Hall, the Bluecoat Arts Centre and Liverpool University Press.
ECW members organise regular conferences, symposia and PGR workshops drawing on Liverpool’s outstanding eighteenth-century built environment and heritage collections, and frequently host visits from international professors, postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students.
Recent research programming includes the Afterlives of 18th-Century Thought conference organised by Lauren Arrington (Irish Studies), the Thomas Rickman and Liverpool conference organised by Alexandrina Buchanan (Archive Studies), and the Writing About Nations study day organised by Kate Marsh (Modern Languages). ECW runs an award-winning MA Pathway in Eighteenth-Century Worlds, and its co-taught undergraduate module Living the Global Eighteenth Century recently won a Faculty Learning and Teaching Award.
As ECW enters its second decade, they are looking to take stock of past achievements and lay the groundwork for future success. In doing so, they’re very keen to reach out to staff and postgraduate students at the university who have not previously been involved with the centre – whether their interests lie in some aspect of the eighteenth century itself, or in the afterlives of eighteenth-century artefacts, texts or ideas.
