Beacon Project

The Beacon Project was established to provide financial support to exciting new education projects and initiatives within the Faculty.

The Faculty encourages staff to develop new ideas and innovative practice which act as catalysts for enhancement. Since 2016, we have provided Beacon project funding on an annual basis to support work of this kind. Open to both academic and professional services staff, successful Beacon project applications receive “seed-corn” funding for initiatives that seek to address areas of strategic significance and enhance the student experience. Successful projects may subsequently be incorporated into a School or Department’s ongoing business.

Beacon Project funding can be used for a variety of purposes, such as:

  • The purchase of additional equipment that would not ordinarily be funded by the Department or School, in order to facilitate a new approach to learning and teaching
  • One-off production costs (e.g. filming, design, or printing costs) and/or the purchase of essential materials for the project
  • Consultancy fees for an external expert to help redevelop an aspect of learning or teaching in the Department or School. A clear rationale will need to be provided for such claims
  • Travel expenses and consumables
  • Staff development, including participation at external events and off-site visits.

Current Projects

The Faculty Beacon Project funds a range of projects every year, and the ongoing list can be found below:

Learn Languages with Subtitles

Rosalba Biasini

Supporting the development and delivery of a Spanish subtitling class, designed to enhance students digital and employability skills.

The project will involve students of Italian and Spanish and will cover the different steps of the subtitling process from the ‘reading’ of a video in Spanish to the production of the target text (in English) in the form of subtitles.

The creation of an Embodied energy sustainability tool for architectural students

Peter Farrall

Developing an interactive online tool that helps students grasp the basic principles of calculating embodied carbon, allowing them to make informed decisions early in the design process.

The tool will encourage students to be more confident and objective, allowing them to create designs that are more sustainable.

Brick Club: Constructing community and departmental belonging

Matthew Fitzjohn

Supporting the delivery of a unique extra-curricular experience for students and staff in ACE, which will focus on building a sense of community and belonging through the use of LEGO.

The sessions aim to provide a space for staff and students to interact outside of the classroom, with the opportunity to teach mindfulness and support productive communication.

A survey following the sessions will evaluate the success of the activities and how they can be developed or incorporated across the department.

Ancient Jewellery Making Workshop – Experimental Archaeology Community Outreach

Dr Nicola George

Piloting an outreach programme aimed at engaging Art and Design students from Wirral Met College.

The programme will involve the running of ancient jewellery making workshops, supported by University of Liverpool students, where participants will learn how to make Celtic bronze torcs.

The workshops aim to establish links with the local community, encouraging a sense of belonging through a shared past.

ACFI 302 Presentation event

Adam Deller

Supporting the delivery of a presentation event as part of a final year module. Students will have the opportunity to perform live presentations to a guest audience of alumni students who are now professionals in business.

The event aims to develop students’ digital and communication skills, and enhance employability while strengthening relationships within the alumni community.
