Activating Liverpool's railway heritage: Integrating historical rail assets for modern sustainable transport and communities

This policy briefing by Dr Chia-Lin Chen (Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Liverpool) and Dr Junjie Xi (Senior Lecturer in Architectural Design and Humanities at the University of Liverpool) highlights the potential of rail heritage to support increase use of public transport, achieve net zero and regenerate brownfield sites.

The briefing outlines findings from a study of rail heritage in Liverpool. Site of the world’s first modern railway, the city will be hosting celebrations for the bicentenary of the Liverpool-Manchester line in 2030. However, many rail heritage assets in Liverpool are currently neglected or underused. Revitalising this infrastructure could bring significant benefits, contributing to local, regional and national objectives to increase rail use and achieve decarbonisation of the transport network.
