Heseltine Institute Policy Briefing 3(18)

Protecting human creativity in AI-generated music through effective licensing

As generative AI is rapidly adopted across business and the public sector, there is concern about its potential impact on the creative industries. This policy briefing by Dr Sabine Jacques (senior lecturer in intellectual property at the University of Liverpool) and Dr Mathew Flynn (senior lecturer in music industry at the University of Liverpool) explores the challenge of protecting creativity in the music industry in the context of increasing use of AI. The briefing highlights the need for a strong legal framework which protects the intellectual property rights of musicians, proposing a ‘dual-licensing’ model which both acknowledges the growing AI-generated music market and protects the musical works on which AI trains.
