A year on from Eurovision 2023, our latest policy briefing by Dr Mathew Flynn (Senior Lecturer, UoL Institute of Popular Music), Dr Patrick Ballantyne (Postdoctoral Researcher, UoL Department of Geography and Planning), Dr Richard Anderson (Postdoctoral Research Associate, UoL Institute of Popular Music) and Professor Alex Singleton (Professor of Geographic Information Science at UoL) develops new findings on the economic impact of the event using data on consumer spending drawn from a partnership with Mastercard.
The policy briefing identifies fine-grained patterns of consumer spending during Eurovision 2023, highlighting the sectoral and spatial impact of the event, which was hosted in Liverpool. The briefing highlights the benefits of this kind of data to understand the impact of large-scale events – such as the upcoming series of Taylor Swift gigs at Anfield – on local economies.
