Our latest briefing is by Georgina Blakeley (Professor of Democracy and Governance at the University of Huddersfield) and Brendan Evans (Emeritus Professor of Politics at the University of Huddersfield). Using research findings from their book on the first mayoral terms of Steve Rotheram in Liverpool City Region and Andy Burnham in Greater Manchester, this briefing highlights some of the key achievements and challenges faced by the mayors. The authors particularly highlight areas where the elected mayors have used ‘soft’ power to develop policy and evolve the office, highlighting the potential for the role of elected ‘metro’ mayor to change over time.
