Heseltine Institute Policy Briefing 2(16)

In our latest policy briefing, Caitlin Robinson (University of Bristol) and Neil Simcock (Liverpool John Moores University) discuss recent measures to address the energy price crisis and whether these are sufficient to protect fuel poor households from rising energy prices.

How can policy protect fuel poor households from rising energy prices?

Energy prices have risen significantly over the last 12 months, affecting a large proportion of the population. Over 25% of UK households are now estimated to be in fuel poverty, meaning they cannot afford to use sufficient levels of energy to meet basic needs. While the UK government has intervened to cap the average energy bill at £2,500 per year, this briefing argues this will be insufficient to support households and prevent fuel poverty. Caitlin and Neil review a range of alternative policies which could alleviate the energy price crisis, and identify a series of long-term investments in energy efficiency, low-carbon heating and renewable energy that could address the energy challenges facing the nation.
