The latest in our Innovations in Public Policy series focuses on Mission-driven government. In this piece, Ian C. Elliott (Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Public Policy, University of Glasgow) discusses the history of the ‘mission’ concept, which has been promoted by the Labour administration as a way to end short termism and align its political objectives across government departments. However, the article argues that the idea of mission-driven government is neither new nor untested. In fact, recent lessons from Scotland can provide valuable insights into the structures and processes required for development of a more strategic state.
