Pandemic Preparedness and Response Facility
A critical addition to the UK’s national infrastructure in pandemic sciences, the new Pandemic Preparedness and Response Facility will house state-of-the-art laboratories dedicated to combating emerging infectious diseases and pandemic threats.
Building on Liverpool’s rich legacy in infectious diseases research, the facility will be the new home of The Pandemic Institute - a unique collaboration between academic, health, and civic partners.
Strategically located next to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, which hosts one of only five specialist infectious disease units in the country, the facility will drive advancements in vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics for potential pandemic threats. It will further strengthen the Liverpool life sciences ecosystem, integrating researchers across multiple disciplines, including biomedical science, data analytics, and behavioural studies, to enhance pandemic resilience.
Founded in 2021 with an initial philanthropic donation of £10M in recognition of Liverpool’s innovative response to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Pandemic Institute has already made a significant impact:
- Awarded £3.6M in critical pandemic research, and responded rapidly to emerging infections such as Mpox
- Established over £5M in pandemic research partnerships with industry
- Funded the development of diagnostics for some of the world’s deadliest viruses
- Invested in infrastructure for the development and testing of treatments and vaccines
- Developed specialist networks to retrain infrastructure developed during the COID-19 pandemic.
With this new facility, Liverpool will continue to lead the way in pandemic preparedness, ensuring a stronger, more resilient future for global health.
