About

Nigel was awarded his Doctorate within the field of Chemical Physics by the University of Sussex in 1992, studying molecular beam clusters via mass spectrometry. From 1992 to 1996 he worked in the USA, first as a PDRA at UCSB (University of California, Santa Barbara) within Prof Michael T Bowers group—at the time of the development of ion drift mass spectrometry by the group—and then as a Visiting Scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory—developing systems suited to providing spectral screening analysis of highly radioactive wastes. Upon returning to the UK he worked briefly under contract at BNFL (British Nuclear Fuels) Thorp as a Technical Support Officer, before joining Oilphase (Division of Schlumberger EPS) as a fluid properties specialist from 1997 to 2000—maintaining and developing analytical services associated with oilfield well testing. In 2000 he joined Micromass/Waters in Manchester, providing installation, service and support for mass spectrometric systems worldwide—which included a 2.5yr stint based in the far east—plus also the development and delivery of technical training for users in relation to the operation and analytical applications of mass spectrometric systems. Nigel departed Waters in 2019, joining the University of Liverpool as a PDRA for Prof. Roy Goodacre at the Centre of Metabolomics Research within the IIB (Department of Biochemistry).

Nigel’s research interest is the application of analytical techniques for investigating challenging chemical species and biological processes; with a particular focus on the use of mass spectrometric systems and data deconvolution.
