Prof Catriona Waitt being presented with BPS award by Prof Sir Mark Caulfield

Congratulations to Professor Catriona Waitt, who received the inaugural Public Engagement Award at this week’s British Pharmacological Society conference.

The award recognises high-quality public engagement, both of pharmacology research and inspiring the public about pharmacology in general.

This is the sixth award this year for Professor Waitt and her team at the Infectious Diseases Institute, Makerere University, Uganda. Their research ‘Attaining Equity of Access to Research (At The EQUATOR)’ aims to increase the fair inclusion of pregnant and breastfeeding women in clinical pharmacology research.

In addition to the award, Professor Waitt was also elected as a Fellow of the Society, alongside Dr Richard Turner. Fellows have demonstrated distinction and peer recognition in pharmacology, through their work, publication and presentation of research, leadership, and contribution to Society life.

Professor Waitt said: “Every woman deserves access to information necessary to make informed decisions about medication use in breastfeeding. It is not enough to generate scientific data – we need to ensure communities understand what this means to them and be able to respond to emerging priorities. It is an honour to receive this reward for the work we have built over the past few years.”

Catriona was presented with her award by Professor Sir Mark Caulfield, President of the British Pharmacological Society and will also receive a £1000 prize.
