A Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) was bestowed on Professor Melita Gordon by the Princess Royal at Windsor Castle this week.

The award was announced in the King’s Birthday Honours list, with Professor Gordon recognised for her services to global health.

Celebrated for her outstanding contribution to gastroenterology and general medicine over the past three decades, Professor Gordon's clinical, research and teaching work has had a profound impact on global health, particularly in Africa.

Professor Gordon, from the Department of Clinical Infection, Microbiology and Immunology, said: "Attending the investiture at Windsor Castle alongside diverse other honours recipients was both humbling and gratifying. The Medal was given by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, and I was struck by how impressively well-informed she was, discussing in some detail with me the situation with vaccination in Malawi. It was gratifying that she was so aware and engaged with our work, and it is wonderful to be able to convey and share her personal congratulations and recognition to my team and collaborators."

Professor Gordon has spent nearly three decades living and working in Malawi at the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme (MLW). Throughout her career, she has dedicated herself to researching enteric diseases and advocating for equitable health solutions for the people of Malawi and across Africa. Her groundbreaking research has been instrumental in the development and deployment of critical Salmonella vaccines, protecting millions of vulnerable children from life-threatening diseases.
