Dawood SabirWhat does your job involve?

To cut a long story short, we solve our client’s business problems by providing technology-inspired solutions. We work in teams of anything from two to 200 people on projects depending on the complexity of the client’s problem.

Would you be able to describe a typical day in your working life?

This is a tough question to answer as each day (and project) really is different for a PwC consultant.

Most days may consist of travelling to the client site, researching new technology-based developments which are relevant to the project, meetings with the team, the client, and key stakeholders.

Depending on the project, we will also do implementation work, date modelling, slides preparation, spreadsheet analysis, testing functionalities, and more. It all really varies per project.

What do you like best about your job?

Getting a chance to work across many sectors such as financial services, public, private, government, health, and more!

The amount of people you get to meet and learn from is also amazing.

How did you find out about the opportunity and secure your role i.e. you had previous volunteer experience, help from careers/upReach, etc?

I started off by undertaking roles for my department as a Peer Mentor and a Course Representative. I also used the UOL volunteering portal to find opportunities to volunteer with EY Foundation. These experiences helped me take my soft skills to the next level.

To gain some experience in Consulting, I did a Management Consulting summer internship with upReach and spent eight months doing pro bono consulting for a couple of organisations.

UpReach is partners with PwC so I did mock interviews with them before my video interview and my assessment centre interview.

Is there anything you’re working on now or plan to do that you’re particularly excited about?

I am currently in week three of my 13 weeks of training.

I am going to enter the business after this training and am particularly excited to do some digital transformation projects where I will help clients integrate market-leading digital technologies into all areas of their business.

What would you like to be doing in five years?

To be honest, I don’t know. Ideally, I would like to continue doing something with Technology but possibly in a different country. I am keen to travel as much as possible in my 20s.

Did you learn anything about the recruitment process for jobs that might help other students – what’s your advice for anyone looking for similar roles?

I would highly recommend all the students to do extracurricular activities as this is really attractive to consulting firms. This can be anything from playing sports, volunteering, or being involved in societies.

Stay in the know with the latest technologies and innovations. This will help you demonstrate your interest in technology to the recruiters.

Develop your network - Don’t be scared to reach out to people who are currently working in the role you want. This is the best way to get a deeper understanding of the role and you may be surprised at how many people are willing to help out.
