Entry requirements

Our entry requirements for international students wanting to study abroad at the University of Liverpool for a semester, year or on our Summer Research Programme.

The University of Liverpool welcomes hundreds of international students every year onto study abroad programmes. To give you the best and most successful academic experience, you'll need to meet our entry requirements.

All non-native English speaking students must be able to show that they have suitable command of the English language. Please check our English language requirements before applying.

Students from exchange partners

If you're from a university that has a study abroad exchange partnership with us:

  • You must have a GPA of 3.0 or above, (or equivalent)
  • You can be in any year of study*.

*Please note that we do not recommend participating in an exchange programme at Liverpool in your final year, unless you come for semester one only. This is to make sure you're able to complete all required assessments and study at your home university to complete your course.

Visiting study abroad students

English language requirements

All non-native English speaking students must be able to show that they have suitable command of the English language. For a full list of acceptable English qualifications, including country-specific qualifications, see the University of Liverpool's English Language entry requirements page for international students.

Students studying at the University of Liverpool for less than 6 months can complete and submit our our English Qualification Form as proof of their level of English. You can upload your completed form with your application. We can only accept our form, please don't include an alternative version of this form from your home university or elsewhere.

Students who are not native English-speakers but who have been studying for at least one full year at exchange partners in Australia, New Zealand or the USA at the time of applying, can provide a satisfactory, signed reference from their home university as proof of their English language ability. This reference must be written on official university letter headed paper and comment on your ability across the four components of English language (listening, speaking, reading and writing).

Please note that all tests must have been taken within two years of your planned start date.

Students who are nationals from a majority English speaking country (as defined by UK Visas and Immigration) are automatically assumed to meet our minimum English language requirements. These countries are:
