Useful application tips
- Make sure to carefully research the partner university and programme you're interested in
- Attend a Global Opportunities event to help you make your decision
- Use our search tool to choose an opportunity that best suits your degree
- If you're interested in an opportunity at a university marked as 'very competitive', we recommend you only choose one university with this criteria. You should list this university as your first choice
- If you're applying for a semester abroad, you won't be able to choose which semester you spend abroad. You can find out which semester this will be in the programme details.
What happens next?
The Global Opportunities team will review your application and give you an overall score.
For semester abroad programmes, if we don't have enough spaces to accommodate all students who have achieved the 60% minimum score, we'll operate a waiting list.
All students will be informed of the outcome of their application after the release of semester one exam results. This is usually in the first week in March. Please note, for Medicine students we will liaise with your department to get your results to allow all students to receive their outcomes at the same time.
How we score applications
Year or semester abroad
We score applications using the following formula: Overall score = (AM+AS)/2
AM is your average mark for semester one and AS is your application score (the score given to your responses to the application questions).
All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application after the release of semester one exam results.
The application questions are scored out of 100, with 25 marks available for each question. Each application is assessed by two members of the Global Opportunities team.
Where two students have the same ranking and are competing for the same place, the student with the higher academic average will be awarded the place at the partner university. If you've met the entry requirements and there are no spaces left at one of your three choices, we'll always do our best to allocate you to an alternative university. Where possible, we'll consider the countries and types of universities you've indicated interest in on your application.
Semester abroad
After ranking applications, if we don't have enough spaces to accommodate all students who have achieved the 60% minimum, we'll operate a waiting list. Students who've had extenuating circumstances accepted and haven't reached the 60% average will automatically be placed on the waiting list. You'll be considered for semester two opportunities if you meet the minimum requirements after resit examinations and if places are still available. We'll contact all affected students to explain this in further detail.
Year abroad
Students who've had extenuating circumstances accepted and haven't reached the 50% average, (or the academic average required by their host university), will still have the chance to get a year abroad place. These students must complete the necessary resits in the summer resit period and reach the 50% average, (or the academic average required by their host university), to continue on the year abroad programme. We'll contact all affected students to explain this in further detail.
Year in China

Summer programmes
No specific academic minimum is required for summer programmes, although you must have passed all of your exams.
The application questions are scored out of 100, with 25 marks available for each question. Each application is assessed by two members of the Global Opportunities team.
Students who aren't awarded a tuition-free place on a summer programme can apply independently to any of our summer programmes via the Global Opportunities team. This will entitle you to financial support and you may also be entitled to a tuition fee discount.
Priority for tuition-free places on our summer programmes will be given to students who:
- Haven't already participated in a summer programme
- Haven't already completed, and haven't applied to, a semester abroad, year abroad or Year in China programme
- Receive the Liverpool Bursary.
