Supporting Excellence: meet the undergraduate scholars

Undergraduate scholarship recipient, Kiran Masaun

As our Undergraduate Scholars reach the halfway point in their first year, we caught up with two of them to find out how they’re getting on.

There are currently 388 first year students benefiting from the University’s new Undergraduate Scholarships which support high-achieving UK undergraduate students from low income households. One such student is Kiran Masaun (pictured above), who came to Liverpool from her hometown of Birmingham to study Medicine.

Kiran said of her decision to come to the University of Liverpool: “It’s such a beautiful city, I’ve visited many times before and feel really comfortable here.

Receiving the University's Undergraduate Scholarship has enhanced my learning journey and already helped me progress as a medical student. I have been able to start a sign language course which will allow me to communicate with hearing-impaired patients. It’s an amazing added extra which I would not have been able to do otherwise.

My aim is to practise medicine in Africa. I hope to make an impact on the healthcare system and have a positive effect on every one of my patients.

Another of our Scholars is Heidi Williams (pictured above), who is originally from Aberystwyth, West Wales and has just begun her second semester studying for a BSc in Geography.

She said: I went to an open day at the University of Liverpool and the staff and lecturers seemed so friendly and helpful which attracted me here.

The scholarship means I do not have to worry about money as much whilst I attend university, which means I can focus more on my studies and achieve more with my degree. My highlights so far have been modules based on climate change as it is so current and it's a threat to all of us.

After I've finished my degree, the dream would be to work in the UN, but really my intention is to just help people or the planet we live on.
