Random Acts of Kindness Day: How your words, actions and giving create a lasting change

Published on

Abercromby Square Pergola

When we launched our Random Acts of Kindness campaign earlier this month, our goal was simple – to spread a little extra joy, positive and kindness. During this time, we’ve seen kindness take many forms from sharing words of advice, volunteering time and giving to support students in need. The campaign not only provided support to our current students, but it was also a reminder of the strong sense of community that defines our university

Kindness in words

As part of the campaign, we invited alumni and supporters to share words of encouragement with current students navigating academic life. More than 50 alumni and friends participated, sharing notes of kindness. Here is a small selection of messages that will be passed along to students at Liverpool:

“You are in the right place at the right time, and you have already taken a big step forward. Make the most of your student life - explore the beautiful city of Liverpool, make new friends, and build meaningful connections. Step out of your comfort zone as growth and learning happen when you challenge yourself.

When things don’t go as planned, remember that better opportunities are waiting for you. Keep defining your purpose, give your best effort, and trust that destiny will align with your dreams. Stay kind, stay positive, and continue inspiring those around you.”

Bhavana Salvi (MBA 2024)

“Remember your strengths and march forward. Continue to shine because you are getting closer and closer to your goals. Go on and make us all proud! Indeed, you are doing great!”

Hajaratu Musah (MSC Operations and Supply Chain Management 2013)

“Going to university has opened doors I never imagined possible. I truly believe that this life changing opportunity should be available to everyone who seeks it. In challenging times, remember that they will pass.

You will grow, adapt, and flourish with the opportunities this qualification brings. Stay resilient, keep striving, and trust in your potential.” Diana Terry (Architecture 1987)

Kindness in action

As well as sharing words of encouragement, many alumni and friends supported the campaign by making a donation or signing up to volunteer. Their generosity helps create meaningful opportunities for students, ensuring they have the resources and support needed to thrive.

Speaking of this support, medical student Rachel said: “Most of the people on my course come from families of doctors, and so have sufficient finances, connections, and knowledge about both university and medicine. This puts students like me at a disadvantage and sometimes means we don’t reach our full potential. The Liverpool Bursary acknowledges that I did not have access to the same funds and resources as others and showed me that this shouldn’t hold me back. Receiving the Bursary means I can prove that I deserve to become a doctor just as much as anyone else.”

Accounting and Finance student Abdullah received mentoring from a graduate, speaking about his experience he said: “He was genuine, helpful, and kind, with calm and composed communication skills that were truly impressive. His attention to detail and ability to break down problems and work together to find solutions exemplified professionalism. He is someone I aspire to emulate in the future.”

Keeping the kindness going

Through heartfelt messages, generous donations and dedicated volunteers, this campaign has shown the power of our community to uplift and support students. Every contribution, whether through words of encouragement, financial gifts, or time, helps create a university experience where students feel valued and empowered.
