Every year on Random Acts of Kindness Day (17 February), people come together to spread a little extra joy. At the University of Liverpool, we’ve seen the incredible ways our alumni and supporters bring positive change to our students and community – whether through small gestures or large acts of generosity. Today, we invite you to take part in our campaign to inspire even more acts of kindness.
How you can get involved
We are so proud of our alumni and supporter community. Here are some ways you can get involved this Random Acts of Kindness Day.
- Donate: Being a student comes with different challenges for everyone. Some of our most vulnerable students need extra support to access the same university experience as their peers and those who came before them. No gift is too small to make a difference – visit our donation page.
- Volunteer: Your time and expertise are invaluable to current students who are navigating their academic life. Take a look at our volunteering page or complete the registration form to get started.
- Share kind words: Hearing stories and encouraging words from those who have navigated the same challenges can be inspiring for our students. Take a moment to share some kind words or share your advice by emailing us at: giving@liverpool.ac.uk or commenting on our social media channels: Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. We will share your words directly with our students.
The power of giving back
Barbara, a former staff member shares the reason she supports students: "I saw a post on social media about the fund and read stories about how even small donations make a significant difference. It made me happy to contribute. I then met a student on the bus who shared her struggles. I am very aware of the hardships students face today, and I wanted to help alleviate some of their stress. It’s important to me to give back and help others where I can. There’s nothing more satisfying than leaving a legacy of helping others."

The impact of your support
Your kindness has the power to make a lasting difference. We know the cost of being a student is not the same for everyone. Some of our most vulnerable students need some extra help to be able to fully experience university life. With your help, we’re able to provide students with the additional resources, guidance and opportunities they need to realise their ambitions. Whether it’s through donating, volunteering your time or sharing words of support, your act of kindness can change lives.
How your support makes a difference:
- Provide scholarships, bursaries and emergency grants for students in need
- Offer mentorship for current students providing valuable career guidance, real-world insights and support
- Inspire and encourage students throughout their studies through kind words of support and advice
The gratitude of students who have already felt the impact of your kindness is a testament to the difference your support makes.
Nish, a second year law student received the Liverpool Bursary to support the costs of studying. He said: “Without the bursary, I don’t know how I would have managed. It gave me the freedom to focus on my education and that made all the difference.”
James, a second year marketing student who was mentored by a graduate of the University said: “[My mentor] gave me amazing support and guidance and really looked out for me during a tough and stressful time at university. They helped me develop a cohesive personal support plan which covered all the main areas of progression and development. They also gave quality advice on presentation skills which helped me overcome some fears I have when presenting.”
Thank you for being part of a community of more than 3,500 people who are doing what they can to make our world a better place. Whether you are donating, volunteering or offering words of encouragement for current students this Random Acts of Kindness Day – you are helping to make a lasting difference.
