Elouise’s path to a dentistry degree: How your support changes students’ lives

Published on

First year student and Liverpool bursary recipient Elouise, shares how without your generosity, she wouldn’t have had a Liverpool experience at all.

"I would describe the support I've received as life changing. I have always dreamt of studying Dentistry, but a series of personal challenges made that almost impossible for me just a few years ago. After leaving home at 16, I was placed in supported living, out of education, jobless and claiming benefits – and was even declared homeless at one point.

I pursued a three-year apprenticeship in dental nursing, working hard to gain as much experience in the field, but didn’t know how I could ever go to university with no money and no A Level qualifications. It wasn’t long after that I found out about the University of Liverpool’s foundation year and the funding support available to those who would otherwise struggle to afford a university education. That’s when my luck started to change.

I enrolled in the foundation year course, which is two years of A-Levels crammed into 22 weeks. I wouldn’t have passed without the support from the University. It’s difficult to be burdened by financial problems and focus on the future at the same time. The Widening Participation and Outreach team at the University has been a real lifeline, helping me overcome many challenges. From the fast-track foundation year to the financial help, the support at Liverpool is unmatched.

It’s because of this incredible support that I decided to become a University Advocate alongside my studies. It’s a rewarding role, and I get to meet new people from different backgrounds whom I can call friends. I also work with the Sutton Trust, leading teams for the Pathways Programme, and I’ve just received a grant from Buttle UK. Thank you to everyone who is supporting the Student Fund. If this fund was not available, I would have had to drop out."
