We are delighted to share our latest instalment of our ‘Donor Spotlight’. In this ongoing series, we highlight the significant impact made by our alumni and friends, whose support and generosity towards our Student Fund creates endless possibilities for students to make the most of their time in Liverpool. Today we speak to former staff member, Barbara Lloyd who tells us about her time working at the University and how supporting the Student Fund is helping her maintain a connection to the University.

Tell us about yourself and your connection to the University.

I trained as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer (MLSO) in the 1980s at Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool, carrying out diagnostic work. Although I always wanted to work in a medical environment, I didn’t attend university because I struggled with OCD. Instead, whilst working at Broadgreen, I studied for my professional qualification. I did this by the preferred method of the time, which was day release, spending one day and one evening per week at Liverpool Polytechnic. I specialised in Medical Microbiology.

I always had an interest in medical research. When I saw an advert for a job at the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University, I knew I had to apply. The job included medical research, diagnostic work and preparation of practical materials for medical and dental students.

I was very happy to accept the offer of the job. The people were friendly and supportive, and I made some great friends there. The work was really interesting and rewarding and I enjoyed building relationships with students. I felt I was part of a family, and it was a privilege to work for such a prestigious institution. Sadly, I had to leave because my OCD became too severe, but I have always felt a strong connection to the University.

What inspired you to support the Student Fund?

Two things inspired me. First, I saw a post on social media about the fund and read stories about how even small donations make a significant difference. It made me happy to contribute. I then met a student on the bus who shared her struggles. I am very aware of the hardships students face today, and I wanted to help alleviate some of their stress. My parents taught me to be generous and help others, and I've been through difficult situations myself, so I can relate. It’s important to me to give back and help others where I can. There’s nothing more satisfying than leaving a legacy of helping others.

What is your favourite thing about the University community?

My favourite thing about the University community is the family feel. Even though it's a large institution, everyone cares about each other. There's a warm and supportive atmosphere, and you can feel the buzz just walking on campus. The sense of belonging and the opportunity to interact with so many different people in various fields is special.

What would you say to others who are thinking about donating to the Student Fund?

I would tell them that every little bit helps. Even small donations can make a big difference in students' lives. The appreciation I received for my donation, despite its size, was extraordinary and made me feel special. It’s a wonderful way to give back and stay connected to the University community.

On behalf of the University, thank you to Barbara for sharing her Liverpool story and supporting our Student Fund. If you would like to share your story, please contact us: giving@liverpool.ac.uk.
