Supporting our next generation of veterinary students
Supported by the University of Liverpool Veterinary Alumni Association (ULVAA) and donors of the Vet Student Fund, each year veterinary students are invited to apply for funding for academic and non-academic activities that enhance their student experience.
Your generosity allows students to explore their passions, gain valuable experience and network with leaders in the field.
Here is a round-up of the activities from the past academic year.
The University of Liverpool Vet Squash Society
On behalf of the University of Liverpool Vet Squash Society, we would like to thank the University of Liverpool Veterinary Alumni Association for their kind financial contribution. Our weekly squash sessions, which are greatly appreciated by our vet student members, would not be possible without their contribution.
We were able to buy new rackets with the money granted to us, so our members would always have access to quality equipment for practice sessions.
Support from ULVAA also made it possible for us to repay committee members who had bought gym memberships to reserve squash courts every week; this has improved our capacity to plan matches such as staff vs. students in which we raised £180 for Vetlife.
We sincerely appreciate ULVAA’s support for our small student society.

Bereaved Vet Students Group
The Bereaved Vet Student Group (BVSG) is the first support group for bereaved vet students in the UK, founded by three Liverpool students in 2023 following their connection through personal losses. We have created a successful online network and impacted the wider veterinary community since forming the group.
In addition to the virtual peer support and a space for shared understanding, we hold monthly in-person meet-ups based in Liverpool. Events such as meal outs, bowling and beach walks have been attended by students affected by the loss of a loved one. The founding members have also visited other vet schools to discuss how students can be best supported through grief, as well as sharing their stories and the work of the group at an online conference in April.
Funding from ULVAA has enabled BVSG to purchase badges for our members, which symbolise solidarity, strength and belonging.

Liverpool University Veterinary Zoological Society
LUVZS would like to thank ULVAA for generously providing funding this year, which enabled us to run an exotic animal handling session in collaboration with Zoo2U as part of our LUVZS Day in January 2024.
29 students across all years of study had the opportunity to practice safe handling of a wide range of uncommon veterinary species, such as snakes, skinks, invertebrates, and owls – not to mention a very friendly skunk!

Liverpool University Vet Netball Club
The funding provided by UVLAA allowed for our teams to compete in both on-campus and off-campus leagues. It also helped to subsidise costs for hiring courts, making training sessions more accessible for all our members. Finally, funding allowed for improved participation in the club this year, which will undoubtedly encourage more girls to take part in following years. We are so grateful for the support we have received from UVLAA!
