Welcome to the second instalment of ‘Donor Spotlight’. In this ongoing series, we highlight the significant impact made by our alumni and friends, whose support and generosity towards our Student Fund creates endless possibilities for students to make the most of their time in Liverpool.

Introducing Martin (BA Medieval English & Medieval History 1987) who reflects on his time at the University of Liverpool, how the university impacted his life after graduation and what inspired him to give back. The collective generosity of our supporter community makes much of what we do possible.

Tell me about your experience of studying at the University of Liverpool.

I chose a course I was really interested in, so I enjoyed my studies as I was keen on making the most of my university experience and learning from experts. I loved the range of activities that the university offered and how accessible they were, one of my personal favourites was playing hockey. I also found it rewarding to participate in some projects in the local community, such as supporting reading in a primary school and volunteering at a social centre for young adults with disabilities. It was also pretty cool just to be able to walk up Penny Lane!

What did you do after graduating?

After graduation, I had had thoughts of being a teacher for a few years but decided to gain experience in a different sector before starting my teaching career. I spent three years working for a Chartered Accountants firm as I wanted a job back in Norfolk. Since my degree was not directly relevant to my role, I had to complete a Graduate Conversion Course. Unfortunately, I didn’t find much job satisfaction in that role, so I decided to pursue a career in teaching. I undertook a Postgraduate Certificate in Education which helped me kickstart my teaching career. I enjoyed teaching so much, so I spent the past 29 years teaching History and then Computing in two secondary schools in London. My career progressed until I became the Head of Department and after a very rewarding time in teaching, I decided to take an early retirement three years ago.

What inspired you to donate to the Student Fund this year?

Having the chance to study at university is such a privilege, especially for someone like me who studied before the introduction of student loans. I believe all students with the aptitude for the courses available should have the opportunity to come to Liverpool. Donating to the Student Fund is my way of showing gratitude to the University for the opportunities it offered me. During my time in teaching, I met many students who faced significant challenges in completing their secondary education, I hope that my donation to the Student Fund helps students benefit from the wonderful experience of studying in such a great city.

What would you say to other alumni who are thinking about making a donation to the Student Fund?

Definitely do it! The information provided by the University helps you to clearly see the consequences your donation can have. It feels good that as alumni we can continue having a positive relationship with the University and have a real impact on a deserving student.

Do you have any advice for current students studying at Liverpool?

Make the most of the many opportunities that studying at Liverpool offers you. I can’t think of any other time in my adult life when I have had that many possibilities to explore. Enjoy the opportunity to learn from experts in your field of study and give something back to the city if you can by participating or volunteering in community activities. Finally, don’t worry if you’re not sure about which employment route to follow. You will have access to resources and advice to support you, and the most important thing is that having a degree qualification will help you change direction in your working life, just like I did.

Thanks to our alumni and friends for their continuous generosity in helping us create a long-lasting impact on students’ lives. From all our students and the University, we thank Martin for sharing his journey and being part of our supporter community.
