COVID-19 campaign donor stories: Adnan Al-Sinawi

Alumnus Adnan Al-Sinawi (MSc Internet Systems 2016)

The COVID-19 Emergency Response campaign was launched to support world-leading and transformational research being undertaken at the University of Liverpool into the fight against coronavirus and its treatment. Thanks to the collective generosity of our alumni and friends, we have surpassed yet another milestone in the campaign, raising more than £200,000.

One of our supporters is alumnus Adnan Al-Sinawi (MSc Internet Systems 2016), who shared memories of his time studying at the University and what inspired him to support the campaign.

Adnan’s study journey started in October 2012 when he was serving for the United Nations in a temporary assignment in one of the remote Duty Stations in Ethiopia. Describing his first weeks of his studies he said: “I didn’t feel comfortable at the beginning finding myself totally out of my comfort zone, in addition to the surrounding logistical challenges. However, I completed the first module, thanks to the Student Enrolment Officer who spent more than an hour over the phone trying her best to lift my spirit up.”

Looking back Adnan added: “I never imagined back then that I would be able to graduate not to mention receiving my degree with Distinction. I then finished the other six core modules when I was in Darfur (West Sudan) in a place called Elgenina, and finally finished my two elective modules and dissertation when I was serving for the United Nations in Mazar-i-Sharif, north of Afghanistan.”

Adnan is currently supervising the Application Support Unit in the Field Technology Section of the United Nations Forces in Cyprus. When talking about what inspired him to support this campaign he said: “The University’s high-quality staffing and the enormous support I received during my studies were the main inspiration factors. This was a humble contribution to show my appreciation and gratitude towards the University of Liverpool.”

He added: “I would like to congratulate the researchers and students for making the right choice, studying in one the most remarkable universities worldwide. You are well taken care of and you will always receive the highest quality support from the those working on the front-line. The experience you’re gaining during your studies will help you overcome any challenge in your future careers. I would also like to the thank each and every staff member working in the University"

Acknowledging the difficult times we are living in, Adnan shared his words of support: “I would like to remind everyone that nothing lasts forever and history shows that we humans have always overcome any difficult situation we’ve encountered in the past.”

We are extremely thankful for the generous support and kindness shown by supporters like Adnan.
