What is in a Surname?
Alex Singleton took part in the BBC The Great British Story event held over the Jubilee weekend at the Museum of Liverpool where he was hosted as an expert in the geographic origins of surnames. Total numbers through the Museum of Liverpool on the day were in excess of 3500.
This event was linked to one of his previous collaborative projects with University College London that maps the historic (http://gbnames.publicprofiler.org/) and global (http://worldnames.publicprofiler.org/) pattern of surname concentrations. This work has been used widely in the ascription of cultural, ethnic and linguistic origins of names, migration studies and more recently as a sampling framework for clinical trials.
