Dr David Chester and his colleague, Angus Duncan of the University of Bedfordshire, have recently been awarded a grant from the British Academy. This grant is to allow the study human responses to historic volcanic eruptions and earthquakes in the Azores. Understanding past responses is important, because these provide information about how societies act when dealing with disastrous events, and has direct relavance for the management of hazards today.

The department has been involved in joint research with staff at the University of the Azores for two decades, a collaboration which has result in a series of academic reports and articles in learned journals.
