Singapore Field Class
Year 3 – ENVS 353
This 30-credit, Year 3 human geography field class involves a 2-week visit to Singapore. Singapore is located at a key geographical and political trading point in South-East Asia, and despite its small size, is a key node in the global economy. It also provides a useful lens with which to examine Asia’s growing importance in the 21st Century. As a multi-cultural city-state which has undergone spectacular economic development over the past 50 years, Singapore provides excellent opportunities for student projects. Staff guidance is provided to students to develop their projects in advance of the field class, and provide a range of ideas though which to study the city.
Student projects in the past have included: the politics of urban development and land-use on such a small island; multiculturalism and tolerance in Singapore’s diverse communities; ex-pat lives and work in the financial services industry, and; democracy and civil society.
