Hartebeest: a Case Study
The hartebeest is a large antelope still widespread across African savannahs south of the Sahara. It was common in ancient Egypt and is easy to recognise in art from the conventional depiction of its distinctive horns from frontal view. Hartebeest bones and skulls have also been found at various sites in Egypt spanning millennia.
BEAST uses this information to check how trustworthy different models of past climates are: do these models accurately predict where we know hartebeest used to be found?
