The reputation of philanthropy is a matter of long-standing concern. Debates between philanthropy’s cheerleaders and critics were at their height in the golden age of Victorian philanthropy, and many current authors and commentators are labelling philanthropy a ‘charade’ that does more harm than good.
In this lecture Hugh Cunningham Emeritus Professor of Social History and Dr Beth Breeze, co-founder of the Centre for Philanthropy, will examine how the points made against philanthropy in the 19th century are very similar to those directed at philanthropy in the 21st century, and ask how concerned we should be. Their talks will be followed by a Q&A session.
This lecture on philanthropy was created in memory of the late Fred Freeman (Hon LLD 2007) to honour his lifetime of achievements, including the founding of payroll giving.
Following the lecture, a drinks reception will take place in the Waterhouse Café. BOOK NOW
