The extant Greek and Roman accounts of Alexander the Great portray his activities as a disconnected series of events that revolve around three otherwise unrelated sites: Mem¬phis, the Siwah Oasis, and Rhakotis (the future site of Alexandria). Viewed from within the framework of Late Egyptian politico-religious ideology, however, these activities — as Greco-Ro¬man writers represent them — not only conform to a familiar and cohe¬rent pattern: they are so distribu¬ted as to confirm Alexander’s legi¬timacy as Egypt’s king.
