A serial technology entrepreneur he has built and run three major start-up software companies that have all become some of the most successful in history.

Steve will share an insight into his leadership journey from humble beginnings in Liverpool to a highly successful entrepreneur with a transformative leadership style. Steve has been strengthened rather than defined by his early background, and his ability to remain grounded and to speak with integrity and compassion, has marked him out as a leader to follow.

Following his talk there will the opportunity for attendees to ask questions to Steve.

Dr Steve Garnett (Hon LLD 2024)

After studying a PhD in Manchester Steve moved to London to start his career at Logica before following a colleague in 1986, to Oracle Corporation. Shortly afterwards, a friend suggested he should join a new company, Oracle.

When he arrived, Oracle was a small and relatively unheard-of start-up, but Steve's drive and talent for sales management underpinned by an understanding of technology, saw Oracle's journey to become the world's second largest software company after Microsoft. After 11 years with the company's executive team, working with leaders like Oracle’s Larry Ellison and Tom Siebel, Steve was in the middle of the dotcom explosion, then joining Tom to establish Siebel Systems which grew to 8,000 employees and a valuation of 60 billion dollars in just four years.

Using his natural ability as a leader in such a competitive environment Steve’s next venture saw him help build another startup technology company, Salesforce, and to take it public. It is now the third largest software company with 70,000 employees and a market valuation of over $350bn. It is also regarded as one of the most innovative companies in the world that also lived as well as talked about Corporate Social Responsibility and demonstrating that you can 'do well as a business' and 'do good' at the same time.
Steve continues to invest in and develops a portfolio of high growth software and service companies. He is committed to giving back to the next generation, he has served an Advisory Council Member of TeachFirst, which aims to address educational disadvantage in inner city schools in the UK and is a donor to the University of Liverpool Maths School.
