Healthcare personnel and facilities frequently come under attack in armed conflicts despite the special protection granted to healthcare under the laws of armed conflict. A record high number of attacks on healthcare across the world was recorded in the last few years, including in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Syria, and Myanmar, often leading to far-reaching, compounding harm to healthcare networks. This talk will explore the legal protection of healthcare from attack and investigate the harms to healthcare (un)seen by this body of law, with a particular focus on indirect and compounding harm that results from protracted and urban armed conflict.
