About the speaker
Jonathan Falkingham (BA Hons Architecture 1984, BArch Hons 1988) is Co-Founder and Creative Director of award-winning property company Urban Splash specialising in urban renewal projects.
After graduation from the University he founded Design Shed, his first design practice which would later develop into shedkm. Alongside this he was also teaching at the University’s School of Architecture.
After a chance meeting, Jonathan teamed up with Tom Bloxham on a project that was to become the first ever Baa Bar in Liverpool’s yet to be developed Ropewalks area. Working alongside his brother Miles and business partner Elaine Clarke, Baa Bar became a great success and when it was sold in 2007 had seven bars and 200+ staff.
The launch of Baa Bar was swiftly followed by the redevelopment of Concert Square, Liverpool, the first project for the newly minted Urban Splash which he set up with business partner Tom in 1993.
Jonathan’s passion is focused on improving the quality of the built environment and finding creative ways in which to not only repurpose historic buildings for a sustainable future but also deliver award winning new buildings that he hopes will be the heritage of the future and has been one of the key figures involved in the regeneration of the Liverpool City Region.
As a Chartered Architect and Creative Director, Jonathan has taken the lead on strategic project design and marketing. His background in architecture allows him to work with the exciting young and established architects, as well as contribute creatively himself, on the full range of Urban Splash projects.
Jonathan is a former board member of the British Architectural Trust (RIBA) and a Trustee of the Royal Court Theatre, Liverpool and was awarded an MBE in the 2013 Queen’s Birthday Honours List in recognition of his services to architecture and regeneration.
